Lady B and the Goblin Queen - aka - A Story about Style
(Have you ever wondered about that great big castle situated in the Northern Territory of Zardenia? I know I have, and like most of you I presume, I have often thought about who could possibly live in such a grand and imposing palace?
Well we do know that Talon lives in the gatetower, and Float and Ty Foon both live within the Royal Gardens. But who lives inside? Well read on and find out.....)
It was an important night in Zardenia. There was a great buzz in the air, and the mood was quite electrifying and excitable. The sky was a lovely warm amber colour, with clouds of pink and purple drfiting lazily by. Any minute now, the sun would go down and the moon would come up, and the evening's festivities would begin. All day long the Zelfs had been hard at work, tidying and cleaning, baking, decorating and getting prepped for what was about to go down in Zelf town. The plants, trees and bushes had all been preened, glowing red and gold chinese lanterns lit up the pathways and the stage was all set.
All the Zelfs from far and wide, came to catch a glimpse of what's hot and what's not in Zardenia. It was one of the most talked about events in the zocial calendar and the guests were all fitted out in their finest attire, scarves and shawls, sunglasses aplenty, beads and pearls, and head-wear were all the rage, and anyone who's anyone was there. The ZJ - Riff was spinning out tunes on the speakers, and all the Zelfs were mingling, chatting and having a zerry good time before the main event - Lady B's Fashion Extravaganza!
Tressa had been supremely busy that day, couiffering and crimping Zelf hair since first thing in the morning, making bee-hives and quiffs and fancy hair-do's and don'ts. The ever-faithful Birchy had scupltured fantastically shaped beasts and zelfs out of hedges, trimming and pruning, and almost lopping the hair off Dandy Lion who popped up from behind the bushes to say hello. Oooops!
Dolly and Buttershy had hung rows and rows of garlands and coloured lights around the stage, Mermalade, Lochlan and Snowphie set out all the chairs around the stage and Webina and Dorothy Doe tested and restested their camera eqipment at the end of the catwalk for photographs later. It was a collective effort, and no-one could be more happier than Lady B herzelf.
She beamed with pride at all the effort her fellow Zelfies had went to, in order to get the show ready. No-one in Zardenia was more thorough and rehearsed than she was. At first glance, you might be forgiven for thinking she was all style and no substance, only interested in the latest fads and crazes but there was more to her than meets the eye. She had impeccable taste and super organizing skills, knowing where each Zelf was at any given time, and could forsee and prevent problems occuring and fix things without breaking a sweat. Not only was she the darling of Zardenia, she was an amazing friend and could sort out any difficulties they were going through, there was simply nothing she couldn't do. All the Zelfs would do anything for her, because she was so kind and gracious and always chilled out, all the time. She had a sunny disposition, was warm and friendly and could make even the coldest Zelf feel a little more warm. Even Ty Foon was less grumpy when she was around!
It was now time for the fashion show to start, and all the Zelfs that were not taking part were sat in their seats, chattering away and eagerly awaiting the creme-de-la-creme of zelf-wear. All of the male Zelfs wore customary bowties and the Ladies sparkled in diamante and pearls. Backstage Lady B had her clipboard, pen and her zedphones and was directing the models to where they ought to be, whilst co-ordinating with the front, and multi-tasking, sorting out all the phwoarrs from the faux-pa's.
'First up, we have the latest in the Zelicious range, modelled by our very own Frostette, Bubblee and Chocolaa.' teased Lullaby in her beautiful dream-like voice as bubbles drifted across the cat-walk.
On cue, the three Zelfs strutted their stuff on the runway, each with their own cute fashionable style, Frostette had a beautiful frosted parasol and headscarf that glittered like a million sprinkles, Bubblee had a bubble-flag and wore goggles and boots, looking like a 1940's air-pilot, and Choccy had a zurfboard under his arm, his hair swept up like a chocolate wave and came out with chocolate flippers and a snorkel, that he may or may not have had a munch on! He just loved chocolate so much, he had to eat some of the whipped up creation!
The Zelfs in the audience clapped and cheered.
'Here we go with the up-to date Masquerade party range, now last year saw some fantastic masks and tiara's, so here are Angelala, Elfa, Lunanne and Howlette with this year's must have's. Ooooooh don't they look cooooooool?' Lullaby coo'ed.
Each of the Zelfettes wore a customary mask, Angelala had a lovely garland of deep red roses around her hair and a silver and white feather mask, Elfa's was decorated with green and yellow leaves and a sweeping willow crown, Lunanne wore a moon inspired creation of blues and whites, whilst Howlette had a fur-lined mask and feather-boa of rich browns and purples.
After the next two rounds, of beach-wear, modelled by the water-loving Zelfs; and the sports-wear, worn in great style by the more speed loving Zelfs, it was time for the finale and Lady B's creations did not disappoint. This season was all about spots and stripes, animal-prints and those that took part in the main event did admirably under the spotlights, the animal Zelfs such as Pandela, Owlmanda, Catsby, Dandy Lion and Ribbita. There was almost an embarassing incident involving Talloolah; who was sporting some very high heels when she wobbled and fell over onto her bottom, but she laughed it off, and everyone saw the funny side.
Whilst the show was going on, nobody noticed two pairs of feet climbing up over the edge of the Rock Pool, nor hands; gripping the walls, or two slippery shapes leaping over the hedges, as two little creatures sneaked into Zardenia and observed from afar. The Zelfs were all busy with the celebrations, to notice that they were being watched....
Two little goblins, one short and fat, one tall and lean, kept their distance.
'Soooo this is Zardenia.' the tall one sneered in a whiney voice.
'It don't look like much.' grunted the short one. 'Too many plants and flowers. Too much light. Snnnoort.'
'What an ugly looking place. Not like our home. Goblinville.' the tall one sniffed.
'Our beloved land. So beautiful with its deep, dark, dank caves, dirty rivers and slimy moss.' agreed the other one.
'This place smells funny. Its sooooo......' the first Goblin said.
'Fresh?' Shorty offered.
The tall one whipped his head round, blinked his little black eyes. 'No.....putrid.' he decided.
'Ewwwww, yes.' The short one mumbled some sort of apology.
The two greeny-grey creatures with their big bat like ears, long spindly limbs and big hooked noses continued to watch the Zelfs as they frolicked and had fun. In time, the short one began to bop his head along with the music until the tall one stopped him with a glare from his beady little eyes.
'We mustn't forget why we are here.' he said, picking his nose. 'Now who look's like the most important looking one here?'
The short one gulped.
'Er....is this a trick question? It's you isn't it? Out of you and me, you're the most important one here.' the stammering short one was confused, and got a clip round the ear for his troubles.
The Zelfs, oblivious that they were being watched continued with their extravaganza. The show had been a resounding success and the Zelfs were all clapping and whooping and hollering and cheering. The 'models' all took to the runway for another turn in all their fashion gear, and Lady B accompanied them out onto the cat-walk.
'Lady B, Lady B, Lady B' the Zelfs all chanted. Lady B looked around at all her friends and smiled and waved. Sat on the front row was Vampula, dressed up in sunglasses, black gloves and wearing a severe bobbed hairstyle for the night, the one Lady B wanted to make an impression on the most, being her very best friend. Sometimes she could be a right Diva. Tonight she gave her pal the thumbs up sign, she loved it all, and it was a great feeling all round. And at least they had the evening ball to take them through until dawn.
Lullaby then surprised them all with an announcement. She had just been given an envelope by Miss Clover, who fluttered away rather quickly.
'Erm.... excuse me Ladies and Gentle-Zelfs. Could I please have your attention for a moment?' she asked over the microphone. All eyes turned towards her. There were a few murmurs and whispers as those closest to her could see her holding an important looking letter.
Lady B and the other Zelfs all waited patiently for Lullaby to open, read and process the contents. A few Zelfs were excited, some were curious and some wishing she would hurry up so they could get to the party. You could have heard a pin drop. Even the two visitors were anxious to hear.
'Huh...hmmm. My fellow Zelfies, by Royal decree, the King Regis and Queen Tsarina have sent this special message, wishing the show a great success and that you all are having a most excellent time. They have no doubt that tonight will be a great zelebration and have requested that our very own Lady B be summoned up to the castle tomorrow evening to talk to her Royal Zighness about the New Year's Banquet Ball and also creating a visionary design for Queen Tsarina to wear herzelf!'
There were gasps of delight, Lady B was a little startled but remained composed and all the Zelfs whooped in amazement at Lady B's Royal invitation. There were more chants of 'Lady B! Lady B!' and all the Zelfs were extremely happy for her. It was a true honour to be invited up to the Palace, and being personally invited for high tea with the Queen herself.
Although she didn't show it, Lady B was absolutely breath-taken with this special request. She loved designing and styling, but to be awarded the highest honour of styling the Queen of Zardenia was astonishing for her.
King Regis and Queen Tsarina were the true rulers of Zardenia, and lived in a great pink and violet stone castle in the North. The castle was tall and grand looking, with towers and spires and a great wall surrounding it. It was indeed the most impressive looking building in all the land. Occasionally the everyday Zelfs might catch a glimpse of the Royal couple, but on the whole they kept themselves to themselves, venturing out only on special occasions such as the grand openings of the parks, or special sporting events. Not much was known about them, but that kept the Royal Family in high regard and the day to day running of Zardenia was all co-ordinated through the Elder Zelfs, a special committee of Zelfs that met around the great round-table to discuss any matters relating to their lands. But the Zelfs all loved their beloved leaders, and everyone worked side by side to ensure Zardenia ran smoothly and peacefully.
The Zelfs were all excited, and having a really good time at the dance after the show. Naturally most of the talk was about Lady B's Royal invite to the Palace. In fact they were so busy talking and chatting, nobody realised Lady B wasn't there herself.
Lady B had taken some time out from the proceedings and was sat alone on the swings of the Hide N' Zeek Playground. Sometimes she came here to think, and being talked about was making her feel unsure. She could see in her fellow Zelf's eyes, the high expectations they placed in her, and the added bonus of being selected by the Queen for a role in the New Year's celebrations added to her pressure. She didn't want to let her friends down, nor the Queen or even herself. Lady B had never felt so alone and miserable.
A rustle in the bushes behind her, made her snap out of her predicament and she wiped the teardop that had formed in her eye with her polka-dot hankerchief and took a deep breath. It was probably one of her friends had come to look for her, so she put on her best brave face and smiled, turning to see whomever had come to tempt her back to the party. It took her a second to realise that she didn't recognise the spindly legs and arms, beaky noses and flappy ears coming towards her.
Meanwhile back at the Day Zee Gardens, beneath the huge black and red canopy, the guests were all mingling and having a great time. Only Flitter seemed a little worried, as he hadn't seen Lady B in a good while. At first he had thought she was taking her time as belle of the ball, getting ready to make a big entrance, but the longer she took, the feeling of uncertainty and nagging in the pit of his stomach began to take hold. It wasn't like Lady B to be late, especially for her own show and as one of her closest friends he was genuinely concerned for her. He asked Catsby, who had exceptional tracking skills to accompany him in finding their friend.
'But, of course mon ami.' Catsby said. 'Any-zing for the sweet Lady B.'
The two Zelfs set off to look for their friend. It seems nobody had seen her since the show had finished and the Royal announcement.
Flitter hovered a few feet in the air, as he scanned the area from above, whilst Catsby took to the ground, pouncing and sniffing, searching all the hang-outs and hideaways. Due to the fact that she was nowhere to be found, really worried the pair. Flitter noticed Catsby stop ahead of him, and peer down to the ground in confusion. He flitted down to his pal below.
'Hey Catsby, what's up?' he asked, landing beside the Cat Zelf.
'Hmmmm, Je ne sais pas, I do not know really... but I have found theez strange sticky stuff trailed across the ground. What eez it?' Catsby put his paw down and sniffed the slime tentatively.
The green, yucky looking slime smeared across the pathway seemed odd and out of place in the usually spotless Zardenia.
'There's no way Manny or Birchy would leave the place so messy' said Flitter worryingly.
'Oui Oui. Let us keep looking.' Catsby said, dipping his paw into the pool to clean.
He took to the ground and bounded away as Flitter resumed his position in the air. They had not long arrived at the Playground when they saw more of the slime and Catsby picked up a scent and called his friend back to his side. Catsby paused at the swings and saw a scrap of Lady B's hankerchief and a pinned note attached to the side, scrawled in dark ink. Flitter saw the look on Catsby's face and feared the worse.
'What is it? You found a note?' he asked quietly, fearing the response.
'Oui mon ami. It seems our dear Lady B has been kidnapped by Goblins.' he said sniffing the note and reading the spidery lettering.
'That's awful. Oh no!' Flitter exclaimed.
'That's not the half of it I'm afraid Fleeter. They also seem to think that she is the Queen.' Catsby whispered in his lazy drawl.
Flitter took the note and read.
'Dear Zelflings of Zardenia, we are the Goblins of Goblinville and have taken your Queen. Do not attempt to rescue.'
'What do we do now?' Flitter asked. Lady B was in actual danger! The Goblins were notoriously ruthless and if they found out they had the wrong Zelf, who knew what would happen???
'My friend, we need to get ourzelves back to ze party, and tell everyone. Ze Elder Zelfs will know what to do!' Catsby sped back to the extravaganza with Flitter in pursuit.
Meanwhile Lady B awoke to find herself in a dark dungeon. She was all alone, far from home and very sad. The thought of not being in Zardenia any more, with her friends made her deeply unhappy. As soon as the Goblins had stepped out of the bushes and came towards her, she knew she was in trouble. They bundled her into a sack and carried her off to only knows where? The little light she could make out was from phosphorescent glowing mushrooms groing out of the stone walls. She wondered how far she was, and if any of her friends knew and were worried about her.
Presently she heard noise from outside and the two Goblins from last night came into the dungeon with a lantern and set of keys.
'Okey dokey, The Queen is ready to see you now, your Royal Highness.' the tall one sneered at her. Lady B remained calm and composed, as she could in the situation.
'Gentlemen I am afraid there has been a zerrible mistake.' she said sweetly.
'Huh?' the short one grunted as the tall one roughly picked her up and started to escort her out of the dank and smelly room.
'My name is Lady B, and I'm not who you think I am.' she said, as one Goblin took the lead and the other followed her.
'Our Queen hopes you enjoyed the guest suite, one of our finest rooms.' the tall one said, completely ignoring her. The shorter one seemed like he had more sense.
'Erm, excuse me young fellow, but I am not the Queen, if that's who you think I am?' she said, turning to face the short one behind her.
'Wh....what?' he stopped surprised.
'Hey, why have we stopped? We got a curfew remember!' the tall one rounded back towards them.
'She says she isn't the Queen.' Shorty said increduously.
'Of course she is the Queen. We're not stupid are we?' Tally prodded her and sneered.
He really was repulsive, snot began dripping from his nose as he spoke. Lady B was appalled.
'No I'm not the Queen, I'm afraid. You have made a mistake. I am but a simple Zelf.' she sighed.
'Bu, but we were watching last night, they were all calling your name and speaking about you all night. You even curtsied at the end of the show. Are you sure you're not the Queen?' the fatter one of the two said.
'Nope, not even close. I'm not that important. Yes it was my fashion show you saw last night but that was all. All Zelfs are considered equal in Zardenia.' Lady B said almost apologetically.
'Oh. But we thought...' the short one stammered.
'Wait a second, that's exactly what a real Queen would say to save herself.' the tall one clearly didn't believe her. 'And you're called Layyydeeeeee..... very la-di-dah.' he held up a spindly arm and stuck out his pinky, pretending to sip tea.
Lady B secretly sniggered to herself.
'True, my name is Lady B. I'm named after Ladybugs. Have you ever seen one before?'
'What those hideous and awful looking red and black spotted winged thingies? Yeah they're despicable. Far too ugly' Tally sniffed, sucking up the snot balancing from his left nostril.
'I always thought they were rather sweet and pretty myself.' shorty said aloud, before stopping and putting his hands over his mouth.
The tall one glared at him. Lady B smiled ever so nicely at him though.
'C'mon we're taking you to see the Queen.' Tally gripped her arm and marched them onwards.
Lady B was a little worried. She definitely did not want to meet their Queen.
'Hang on, if she really isn't the Queen of Zelfs, won't Gobriella be mad with us?' Shorty asked, trying to keep up.
'So?' Tally sneered again at his companion.
'So.... we're the ones who'll get it in the neck. Again. She doesn't like us anyway. And if we have messed up again.....' Shorty huffed and puffed.
Tally stopped and thought about it.
'Hmmmm..... you are right. She will lock us in chains again.' he looked worried himself now.
'And even worse, she'll make us sit outside in the sunshine, with all the flowers and cute little animals running around. In the meadows. Up there, in the blue sky world.' Shorty added.
It didn't sound so bad to Lady B. But to the dirty, smelly Goblins it was their idea of torture.
'What do we do?' they asked each other. The three of them stood silently thinking for a minute or so.
'Maybe I could pretend to be the Queen?' suggested Lady B. They looked her.
'Why are you trying to help us?' Tally asked suspiciously.
'Because that's who I am. If anyone, regardless of who they are needed help, then I would do all that I could to help them.' Lady B said.
'That is sooooo kind.' Shorty half sobbed, looking emotional.
'Can it, blubberguts.' Tally said, as he thought about it some more. There really wasn't many options.
'We got no other choice. You better be good Layyyydeeeee B. Or we'll squish you like a bug.' he emphasised this by hitting his fist into his other hand and walked off.
'Really?' she asked the shorter one.
'Nah, he wouldn't hurt a fly. All talk that one!' Shorty replied.
'Then why do you let him talk to you like that?' she asked as they crept along the corridors.
'I don't know really.....Maybe I should stand my ground?'
'Bullies never win. You shouldn't let him bully you anymore. You are a kind fellow, from what I've seen so far.' Lady B was smiling at him.
'Oh um...geee....thanks.' Shorty stammered. He was blushing now. It was quite sweet.
They walked in silence for a minute before arriving at the grandest cave room she had ever seen. Goblins stood all around, with spears and lances in their arms. In the very centre of the room, was a throne and on it sat the Goblin Queen. She was actually rather beautiful Lady B thought, though she was taller and ganglier than any other goblin there. But her nose was much less hooked and her ears were smaller as well. She had wisps of curly green seaweed like hair and big black pretty almond shaped eyes. In certain light, the Goblin Queen could have easily been looked upon favourably.
Lady B bowed fully towards her. The Goblin Queen just blinked and watched her as she slowly inched forward to introduce herself, seeing as no-one else seemed to do so.
'Good afternoon Queen Gobriella.' she said sweetly.
The Queen, suddenly remembered her own manners slid off the throne and held out a slimy looking hand. Lady B was unsure what she should do, looked across at the two Goblins who had brought her here. Tally was looking around elsewhere, trying not to be noticed by the Queen, but luckily Shorty 'mimicked' a vigorous handshake. Lady B took the Queens hand and practically shook her hand off. The Goblin Queen laughed, a deliciously evil sounding laugh.
'Oooooh good. What a firm handshake!' she laughed. The Goblin Queen bent over double to look at her adversary.
'You are rather short are you not?' she asked.
'We Zelflings are a small tribe really. Certainly not as tall, imposing or majestic as you m'lady.' Lady B politely said.
'Ahaha. Flattery will get you everywhere.' she laughed. 'It is good to meet a Queen from elsewhere.'
'Likewise your Highness. You have a very nice place here.' Lady B continued.
'Thankyou. It'll do I suppose.' The Goblin Queen snorted.
'And you're royal kidnappers were most accomodating and polite.' she added, hoping that the Goblins would be rewarded, even though Shorty had been the only one to show any kindness towards her.
'Ah yes. You two!' she said pointing to them. 'For your reward you'll get a day at our mud spa, waited on hand and foot. Now scram!' she said, as Lady B's allies sped away sharpish, leaving her alone with the Queen.
Lady B and the Queen spent a few hours chatting about day to day things, the weather, the decorations in the caves, the taste of seaweed tea and all about Zardenia.
'I would like to visit one day.' the Queen said, looking as if she really didn't. In fact lady B thought they were getting on rather well considering the circumstances.
There was a noise somewhere outside the room. Suddenly to her great surprise and disbelief 5 of her friends burst into the room, wearing helmets and shields! Flitter, Catsby, Snap Jack, Lochlan and Dandy Lion!!!
It was a very strange sight to see one of their own, sat on cushions, cup of tea in hand, having cake with the Goblin Queen and all five of the heroic rescuers stood open mouthed.
'What is this?' the Queen rose from her seat and looked thunderous.
'A rescue. You took our friend and we're here to save her!' they chorused.
'You have come to rescue your Queen, how delighful!' the Goblin Queen laughed viciously. 'Guards! Seize them at once!' she commanded and her guards picked up the Zelfs in their long arms with no problem or force.
Lady B stood for a second, and thought, her mind in overdrive. What could she do now?
'Your Royal Higness, it is with great regret that my Royal Guard have attempted to rescue me,' she said apologetically, 'Especially as I so willingly came here. Please do not judge them harshly. As your guards would for you, my friends would do anything I commanded of them.'
The rescuers looked on in absolute amazement. What was going on? Why was Lady B acting like she was the Queen. Only Catsby seemed to be unconcerned and was busy licking his paw. It took Flitter a second to realise that she must have a plan in mind, and that they should go along with it.
'Our sincerest apologies Queen Lady B.' he bowed his head. The others looked at him and followed accordingly.
'Perhaps you would be so gracious to accompany my guards to the borderlines of Goblinville where they are to wait for me?' Lady B asked, hoping the Queen would let her friends go.
The Goblin Queen debated for a second. She could very well be angry and lock them all away for a long time, but seeing as Lady B had been so nice and friendly, the Queen thought she owed her the same respect back.
'Fine. Take them away.' she flicked her hand as the guards who were not used to their Queen being so nice, hesitated a second before taking the 5 Zelfs away quickly. Flitter smiled at Lady B and hoped that she would be joining them shortly. Lady B gave a quick smile before turning back to the Queen. Flitter was greatful for Lady B saving them, trying to save her. She truly was remarkable.
As they returned to their seats after the brief interruption, the Goblin Queen asked Lady B what she did all day long, as she the Queen grew extremely bored, sitting on her throne all day doing nothing but barking orders. Lady B said that the majority of her time was spent accessorizing and kitting herself out in fabulous outfits which the Goblin Queen suddenly became extremely interested in so Lady B spent a while, going through the Queen's things and helping her become more stylish! The Goblin Queen was so impressed that she had no choice but to let Lady B go after she had helped jazz up her hair, and made a tiara out of thorns, and whipped up some creations and fabulous style tips to help the Goblin Queen look rather splendid.
At the edge of the Goblin borders, the 5 Zelfs that had attempted to rescue their friend Lady B were amazed when she casually strolled up to them.
'Wow. How did you manage to get away?' Dandy asked.
'I just spent time with the Queen. And maybe gave her some fashion tips?' she laughed.
'Only you could be kidnapped and manage to talk your way out of it!' laughed Flitter.
'Thank you so much for coming to rescue me.' she smiled sweetly at them all.
'C'est no problem. Alzthough you ended up rescuing us!' Catsby purred.
'Well losing is not really my style! Haha.' she said warmly. They all laughed.
'Well is my lady ready for the journey back?' asked Lochlan.
'I'm ready.' she laughed and they were just about to set off.
'Wait.....waiiiiiiiiit!' a voice called them. They turned round to see two goblins running towards them. One tall, one short.
'We just wanted to say goodbye.' Tally said.
'Really? How kind of you!' said Lady B to the astonishment of the others, who weren't used to seeing polite or nice Goblins.
'Yeah, well don't get all sentimental. You did us a favour back there, so we owe you one.' Tally sniffed, again.
'Here. Take this.' Lady B gave him her hankerchief.
'Whats this for?' he asked, picking his nose.
'Erm... for your neck,' she said, wrapping it around his throat. He looked at it, then at her and burst into tears.
'Thankyou.' he said, crying into her arms. She smiled.
'We do owe you a favour, so should you ever need our help. Come find us!' Shorty said and shook her hand vigorously.
'Thankyou. I will.' she said. 'Now unfortunately I don't have anything else to give to you.' she said sadly.
'That's okay. You've helped me more than you know.' he said.
Lady B smiled sweetly at him.
'You're the kindest Goblin I ever met.' she said.
Lady B and her fellow Zelfs left the two Goblins crying into each other's arms as they set off back to Zardenia. Arm in arm, they followed the yellow brick road all the way back home.
And as for her meeting with the Queen Tsarina? Ah, well that's another story......
(Have you ever wondered about that great big castle situated in the Northern Territory of Zardenia? I know I have, and like most of you I presume, I have often thought about who could possibly live in such a grand and imposing palace?
