Garny and the Dark Zelfs - aka a Story about Awesomeness
(Part 1)
(With every story about light, you also have to have a story about shade - now we know about the pure born white Zelfs from last week's story, here's the story about the pure born black Zelfs...)
It was very early in the morning in Zardenia, and Angelala was up at the crack of dawn. The sun was just coming up over the horizon, and this was her favourite time of day. The whole of Zardenia was bathed in a beautiful tangerine glow. Looking out of her window, in the Divine Windchime, she could see everything for miles around. The flowers were yawning themselves awake, the bird chorused their approval for the day ahead, and several butterflies flitted around her flower boxes as she watered her collection of herbs at the window sill.
'This is going to be a great day'. she told herzelf, as she breathed in the glorious morning air.
She was momentarily surprised to see that she wasn't the only Zelf to be up at this time of day. Usually the Zelfs liked to snuggle in bed until the very last moment (like we all do), but she was one of those rare ones who didn't want to miss a single moment of the day. As she scanned the breath-taking scenery before her, she saw that Garny was awake and sat at the waterfall by himself.
Angelala had always been fascinated by the dark Zelf. He was a bit of a loner - dark, mysterious and brooding. She didn't like to see Zelfs alone. The Elder Zelfs had told her parts of his story, and she felt equally as sorry for him, as she did intrigued. She was used to seeing him off doing his own thing, and felt compelled to help him.
Sometimes when the Elders went down to the big planet down below to 'collect' the baby Zelflings, on occasion they would find the remnants of the meteor rock that cradled the baby, but no sign of the little critter themselves. The Zelfling would be nowhere to be found. This would both surprise and confuse the Elders, who had no idea what would make a Zelfling disappear. Madame Tarot had predicted a baby would arrive on Friday the 13th, and gave the Elders the co-ordinates, but when Snowphie and the others arrived, the Zelfling was long gone, with no clue as to their where-abouts.
The Elders held a meeting, around the huge round stone table in the Palace Cabinet rooms, to discuss the matter of the missing Zelflings. In a matter of months, the last 5 Zelfings had been missing and they were mystified by the disappearances. They deduced that someone or something was taking the baby Zelfs before they could get to Zardenia, and be brought up properly. This was both worrying and troubling to the Elders. Someone was messing with the natural order of things, and Zardenia itself was being threatened.
On the whole, Zardenia was a very peaceful nation, and trouble very rarely ever happened there. Occasionally the goblins might try to sneak in and steal some food or precious items, or maybe the Vegie patch would be attacked by hungry caterpillars, and there was once a Dragon that tormented Zardenia but they were saved that time by the shy but brave little Miss Clover, but for the most part, the Zelfs lead fairly peaceful co-existant lives, with little to no trouble.
The Elders had decided that they needed to know who were behind these mysterious disappearances and had entrusted Snowphie , Jewely and Miss Clover to seek and find out who was taking these Zelflings and to try and bring the little ones back to Zardenia, where they ought to be. Grandfather Time and the others were worried that if the Zelflings weren't in Zardenia where they belonged and could be looked after, then they didn't know what would happen to them, alone in the big wide world.
The Zelfs were all told this story as part of their history lessons with Mr Oakley, the teacher of history, and it was written down in the Elder scrolls for all to see, the history of Zardenia told of many stories; some of which you may hear very soon. Grandfather Time kept all the histories, going back centuries hand-written on scrolls and kept in the vaults of Zardenia, beneath the castle. That was how he got his name after all.
Now Angelala had heard the story many times, she had always been fascinated with the Zelf stories especially those that were not the normal way of things, and had taken particular care to be welcoming and friendly when Garny was finally initiated into Zardenia, knowing his tale was a tragic and deeply sorrowful one.
For the truth be told, Garny had never felt like he belonged. Like anywhere. He had always felt like the odd-zelf-out, when it came to all things, passed from pillar to post and back again. Even though he had been welcomed into Zardenia and made some friends here and there (and the occasional rivalry), he still felt like an outsider that didn't really belong here.
'Well Hi there Garny!' Angelala's melodic voice called out, snapping him out of his daydream. Garny turned away from watching the water cascading down the rock face, towards the sound of his fellow Zelf who was skipping gaily down the path towards him with a picnic basket in tow.
'Hello Angelala.' Garny croaked with his raspy voice. She could tell he had been sad only a moment before from his composure, but he smiled his best smile to hide his sorrow.
'What brings you here at this time of day?' she asked, sliding up to the side of the waterfall's edge. 'Do you mind if I join you. I brought fresh bread and jam?'
'Of course. I was just sitting and thinking about stuff. And bread and jam is my favourite.' Garny motioned her to sit down. Out of all the Zelfs in Zardenia, Angelala was one of Garny's favourites. She was kind, calm and peaceful and didn't judge him, no matter what mistakes he made. She instantly made him feel better with her kind words and gestures.
'Is there anything I can help you with? A problem shared is a problem halved, so they say?' she said, spreading delicious stawberry jam onto fresh crusty bread.
'Um.... I'm not very good at sharing my problems Angelala. I'm sorry.' Garny said apologetically. Angelala felt for him. Garny could be boisterous and competitive when he was with his friends Flamy and Lil'D but when he was on his own, he was particularly vulnerable and sweet hearted.
'Well instead of telling me your problems, tell me something about yourself. Maybe that will be easier?' Angelala said, trying to help him out and offering him some bread. In fact Angelala had a little crush on the raven locked dark Zelf, but kept that to herzelf.
Garny took the food willingly, took a mouthful and promptly got jam on his nose. Angelala giggled. Garny realised he had made a mess, and rubbed his nose, blushing.
'Ooops.' he laughed. 'Actually, I ummm.... don't know where to begin.' he rasped, and immediatley went back to being sweet and shy again.
'How about you start at the beginning. Take your time.... I'm good at listening.' Angelala smoothed the crumbs off her lap, daintly dabbed her mouth with a napkin and poured out some delicious hot tea from her flask for them both.
Garny looked at her intently. She was very kind to him. He took a deep breath and began.
It all started with darkness. The little Zelf blinked, and slowly little white lights began lighting up in the indigo sky above him. He tried to sit up, taking his time, as fragments of rock surrounded him. He stretched out his arms, wiggled his toes, felt his head, his droopy ears and his long soft hair. His hands and feet were as black as the night. He waited, not sure what for, but he knew someone was coming for him, and they weren't too far away.
After a minute or two, of waiting in the silence, he took in his surroundings. He was in the middle of a rose garden, amidst the shadows of a tall gothic castle. He could see tall turrets, and stained glass windows of the imposing building, but it was all in darkness, like it had been long abandoned, with no signs of life anywhere. The roses he could see were all black or dark, their twisted and curled vines and thorns creeping up the side of the castle wall. There were no sounds at all, not even the night creatures were awake at this time of night, the Witching Hour.
Presently Garny could hear a snap and a crackle, like someone stepping over twigs and soon a deep blue glowing light grew closer and closer. The light hurt his eyes, and gave him a headache whilst also making him feel all goose-pimply. He felt disoriented and dizzy, and the light both confused and scared him. He knew he was supposed to wait for someone, but didn't know who or what to expect. It certainly wasn't the pale white skin, long dark black hair and violet coloured eyes of the lady in front of him. A tickling on his arm, and he looked down and brushed a spider away that scuttled off under the rose bush. Garny blinked, and watched the lady come closer, the light coming from the end of a wand in her hand. She was strangely alluring with her big purple eys and cold, think dark lips.
'Hello little one, what do we have here?' the lady said in a soothing yet metallic voice. Garny looked at her dress, it was silver and black, with purple velvet ribbons and she wore a black and violet top hat with netting in her long sleek jet black hair. He also noticed she had clear gossamer wings attached to her back. She looked at him with her dark questioning eyes as if trying to read his thoughts.
'My my, what a dark little cutie you are. I think I will take you home with me. Come on now, stand on your feet, little one, and step closer to me.' the lady with the cool clear hypnotic voice beckoned him. Garny struggled to his feet and took his first tentative steps towards this stranger. He felt woozy, like his whole body was vibrating and immediately fell down onto his bottom. He yipped and blinked his big dark eyes pitifully.
'Hurry up, stop dawdling.' she barked at him. Garny struggled to his feet, not wanting to disappoint her and made towards her as fast as he could. He only wanted to please this lady who had come to rescue him.
'Hmmmm.....let me take a look at you in the moonlight,' she snatched him into her arms, and flipped him around and upside down, checking him over. Garny felt even more dizzy now as she poked and prodded him all over.
'Interesting. You look like a dark creature indeed, and it looks like you've got a tattoo of your surroundings, imprinted onto your skin. There are the roses, and spider and vines. I'm sure they weren't there a minute ago. And for a second it looked like you were changing colour too. Although I'm glad you didn't, as I can't abide bright, happy colours. You're coming with me back to my home, where you will do everything I say from now on and become my slave.'
The woman didn't seem so kind after all. Garny had no choice but to go with her, he didn't know who was supposed to really come for him and take him away. Minutes after the tall dark lady with the wings took him, the Elder Zelfs arrived at the castle to find no sign of the Zelfling they were expecting and they had to return to Zardenia empty handed.
The dark fairy took Garny by the hand and flew off through the air into the night, Garny was terrified at first, but after a while he became used to it. To the dark lady's immense surprise, he suddenly sprouted black bat-like wings which aided him so she didn't have to pull on him so much as they flew back to her home, a black rotten twisted tree in the middle of a swamp.
For months and months, Garny was put to work, cooking and cleaning, sweeping and chopping wood and collecting herbs and flowers for the Dark Fairy, as she got on with her daily life. She would go off travelling for days at a time, and Garny would be left alone with instructions, and if he didn't live up to her high expectations then he would be reprimanded and scolded. His only comfort was some of the creatures who scuttled around in the dark shadows of the swamps, like beetles and spiders. For a long time, this was Garny's life and he grew used to it, although he was sad at times, and the Dark Fairy was cold and uncaring, this was what he thought his life should be.
One day there was a knock at the door, and there was a strange creature at the door, when Garny went to answer. As usual he had been in trouble with his mistress for not washing the plates exactly as she ordered him to, so she was in a very bad mood with him.
'Well hello there, is the lady of the manor at home?' the creature before him said in a voice that sounded like nails on a chalk board. He was covered in a cloak so that Garny couldn't tell what he looked like exactly. He was short, and wore an assortment of garments.
'Who's that? Who is that at the door?' the Dark Fairy Grendella screeched down the corridor.
'Erm....who shall I say is calling?' asked Garny politely with his raspy voice.
'Tell hera friend. I have travelled many miles to seek audience with the dark fairy. My name is Stinky.' the visitor answered. He removed the hood to reveal he was a dirty brownish colour, with big dark eyes and long matted hair covered in slime and mud. He smelled really bad, like his namesake. There was something a little familiar about him though.
Garny made the guest wait at the door as he shuffled off towards his boss. As he entered her spell room, she threw a shoe at him just to let him know he was useless and a waste of space. He ducked by the door, as the shoe hit the wall behind him.
'I'm sorry m'lady. There is a creature by the name of Stinky at the door who wishes to speak to you.'
The dark fairy rattled her brain to think if she knew the visitor or not.
'Fine, send him in,' she said waving her bony cold fingers at him. 'And make some hot tea, even you can't manage to get that wrong!' she added with venomous spit in her voice.
Garny showed the visitor to the drawing room and offered him a seat. He was a little worried that he'd have to clean the seat afterwards, seeing as Stinky seemed to be covered in muck and grime. He did however notice that Stinky seemed to be watching him at all times, even as he spoke to the Dark Fairy, whilst Garny got on with his duties.
He left the room to bring in the tea, and as he entered he heard them discussing him. It seemed Stinky wanted to take Garny with him elsewhere and was bartering with his owner.
'There is no way Grendella will want to get rid of me.' Garny thought as he kept his head down and served them tea. They were still deep in discussion as he left the room again to concentrate on his work.
A minute later, he head her bark his name and he wondered what she would tell him off for this time. She had a habit of yelling at him or beating him even if he had done nothing wrong.
'So it would seem that you are suddenly in high demand,' Grendella said, twirling her dark locks around her bony fingers. 'Stinky here, wants to add you to his collection. What do you think about that?' she said to her servant, who blinked, wondering what on Earth the visitor would want with him.
'Oh yes, I think he would be very useful to me.' Stinky agreed.
Garny didn't say a word. He knew that Grendella would not want to be rid of her only help around the place. He had hoped that she valued his companionship, even if she didn't particularly treat him very nicely.
So he was greatly disheartened when she casually tossed him aside for a pouch of beans.
'Take him, he's no use to me.' she had said cruelly and promptly. Garny was very sad. Living with her was all he had ever known. Poor little Garny.
So before he knew it, Stinky had procured the little black Zelf as his own, and off he was again to a new place to live where he hoped that this funny looking creature would be a nicer master for him. Stinky hardly spoke to him on the journey, and Garny was carrying a heavy load on his back. Grendella had hardly even said goodbye to him, and didn't seem at all bothered about it really which made Garny feel unwanted, after a year or two of servitude.
When they arrived at Stinky's place, and he had still not spoken to Garny, who was left to assume that he was to unpack and start on the cleaning, Garny looked around and could almost cry. The place was just like a rubbish dump, mess everywhere with mud, slime, and garbage absolutely everywhere. Garny didn't know where to start. He unpacked his dustpan and began sweeping up the doorway.
'What do you think you are doing?' Stinky asked in amazement. 'Do you think i brought you all this way to clean for me. I like this place exactly as it is. Put that dirt back down!'
Garny stood shaking like a leaf. He didn't understand what exactly what Stinky wanted him for.
'I'm sorry master. What would you have me do then?' Garny asked trembling. He had assumed Stinky wanted him as a servant.
'I'm a collector. Take a look around. I collect things. I didn't get you to be my hired help. I'm collecting you!' Stinky said and lead Garny by the arm down a network of cave tunnels downwards and deeper into the earth. Garny felt scared now, but he had no choice. He belonged to this strange, smelly, greasy haired creature now.
Stinky took Garny down to a room, where he shoved him inside roughly and shut the door, locking poor Garny inside.
'I'll be along for you shortly, don't touch anything, don't try to escape and don't do nothing until I come back here. I need you for a special mission.' Stinky called through the barred doors, his breath smelled as bad as the rest of him.
Garny stood in the darkness. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do. How did he get here? Why didn't Grendella want him anymore? What had he done wrong? What had he done to deserve any of this. He was all alone.
