It's no secret I collect zelfs with my daughter. They started up primarily being hers, but in the end I caved and got my own collection. She is the completist type, I am not. She likes to play with them in all kinds of places (sandbox, seashore, bathtub, shower etc etc), I primly display mine in a Billy shelf with glass doors. All this means I have to get doubles of quite a lot of them of course...Now I am curious, how do other parent-kid collectors go about collecting? Do you share, buy doubles, display or play or both etc?

I have a 7-year-old daughter. She's a little too young to be on this forum yet. We get doubles of most of the Zelfs. My father loved toys, too, so I'm sure I got my love of toys and dolls from him. My mother is more of a practical-type of person who can't imagine spending money on something that is purely frivolous, so she'd probably think I was crazy for having my own set of Zelfs. LOL!
How old is your daughter?

I've always found this really interesting. I don't have children, and don't think I ever will (love them though), so I've always wondered how it works when parents who collect have to 'share' their toys with their kids (if that makes sense!) I think it's cute that you get doubles of the Zelfs (or have two collections in your case, teafaery). Also, Violet; I have somebody in my life who is pretty negative about toy collecting & views it as 'frivolous' too, so it's oddly comforting to know I'm not alone there. Neither my niece or nephew collect Zelfs, but my nephew does like a lot of the same things I do - old videogames, Lego - so we share that. It's really nice

Violet: Oh then they are almost the same age My daughter is 8 so she is not on here in person either, but she enjoys looking at the collection photos and customs. The customs section inspired her to repaint some herself too; Birchy became Blui the blueberry zelf I think I'm the only adult toy collector in my family and among my friends, at least no one else is open about it . But our family collectors gene is strong though. Some in my family looked at me a little funny too when I first started my collecting, but by now I think they're used to my craziness.. Btw I must thank you for a really good idea you had in another thread; when zelfs disappeared from Norway and we could not go zelfing in store anymore I wondered how to get them without totally spoiling lil' teafaery with boxes full all at once (not much point in ordering only one from Character f.ex since the shipping cost is flat rate). But then you gave me the idea of putting them in a "surprise box" and pulling one at a time. So now we go zelfing in our livingroom instead

My little girl is pretty clear about ownership..LOL! And I prefer to keep mine in as good a condition as possible, which does not go very well with rough play, so the solution for us at least is to have two collections but we really enjoy sharing this hobby. I feel so sad when I hear people being put down for liking and collecting toys. I often read frustrated comments on doll/toy blogs saying how parents etc won't allow collecting and say really mean things to their kids for having this interest. I just don't understand the controversy I guess. If you truly enjoy a hobby then those who care about you should support you in my opinion. In any case I do not believe you are alone in getting negative feedback from some twinklestah, but happily you are not alone in loving toys either

I hope you don't mind me joining in, as I don't have any kids either, but I think its great that you Parents have this hobby that you share with your children! Its amazing really! I've always been a bit of an obsessive, with one thing or another (Power Rangers, WWE Wrestling, Spice Girls, Pokemon, Disney, Harry Potter and now Zelfs) and if my family think I'm weird, they've never said anything. I think, as its not hurting anyone, or impacting on others lives, who cares what people collect??? Actually I think I must get it from my mum, she absolutely adores Tinkerbell, so I always get her things to do with her! In fact, I have bought Zelfs for my nieces and nephews before, and my sister and brother both look out for Zelfs for me, in fact my sister got a Snowphie for me in the end, as I was unlucky during that promotion! If I ever have kids one day, I will happily endorse and help them with whatever they decide they want to start collecting! I just love toys in general!!!

LOL. Like my mother, who thinks buying toys is frivolous, but spends hundreds of dollars (American) on DVDs, clothes she doesn't need, and new furniture even though her house is full of furniture.

My daughter and I share our collection! She's four but plays really gentle with her toys. I thibk that's my "fault", because I can't help but to tell her she needs to be careful/gentle with all of her toys! I am a toy collector too, I have monster high, Sylvanian families, a few Novi Stars, a few Ever after High, mini lalaloopsy's and Pullip dolls. We share the Zelfs, MH and Lalaloopsy collections. We do not have any doubles (yet). My hobby is a secret for the outer world, my closest friend and family know, but even my husband doesn't know the size of some of our/mine collections!

Sylvanian Families is a line of toys I've always wanted to buy for myself, but never did. I bought my daughter a couple of Sylvanian Family sets last Christmas, but didn't buy any for myself. (They're called Calico Critters here in the USA, for some reason I can't fathom.) I do occasionally buy myself a Mini Lalaloopsy, though. They're cheap and cute and small, and I keep them on my desk with my Zelfs. I also have a weird affection for Domos, too. (The cute Japanese monster with the open mouth and sharp teeth.)

Well to start off..we open..everything!! Haha, but I'm ok with that!
I was originally an MLP collector for the past 25+ years, and I always bought my niece MLP, well then we discovered Zelfs, and I thought they were adorable!
My niece fell in love with them instantly! She's more of an organizer player. Lol, so she likes to organize her Zelfs! She's eight and very smart for her age and she's excited about having her very own collection after seeing my collect MLP for so long!
Ykno, the forum is so nice and friendly, I would love to start bringing in some junior members. They could even have a custom title under their name like "Jr Member" so that way if we notice they're getting out of hand/etc we can help them a long!
I know my niece would LOVE to talk to other kids who collects Zelfs!

My daughter loves the Sylvanian families! I actually had some of them when I was a kid too, that I have now passed down to her. Some toy lines really last longer than others. I probably got some of the first that came out come to think of it...It's the same with mlps. My G1 ponies live on in my daughter's collection. I remember when they first came out over here and where the hottest toy at school. Every girl in my class collected them at some level. Wow time flies
